Ain't no other man, can stand up next to you. Ain't no other man on the planet does what you do.

Another bad dream.

I have found out who is calling my mobile anonymously. It's The Girls' ex.
My mobile rang at 3.13am this morning. It woke me from what felt like a sound sleep. Bleary eyed, I saw on the screen what I pretty much expected, "anonymous calling". Instead of ignoring it as I usually do, I picked up the call. I said nothing, just listening. On the other end of the phone I could hear calm, gentle breathing, followed by a couple of breathy sighs. Then a voice....

"I'm only going to say this once to you, so listen very carefully. You think you're in a relationship with The Girl, but you're wrong. You're very wrong. She is just a little confused about things, but I'm not. She is meant to be with me and nothing and nobody will ever stand in our way.
This isn't so much as a warning, more of a statement of fact. She WILL be with me because nobody else can have her."

....and with that, he hung up.

The next thing is gonna sound a little unbelievable, but I woke up from this bad dream, went to the toilet, got myself a drink of water and lay back down to drift back off. I hadn't fallen back into deep sleep, when my mobile started ringing. I looked at the screen and sure enough it was "anonymous calling".
My heart sank, my stomach twisted and I felt myself swallow hard.
I left it to ring out....no message....thank fuck for that.

Wednesday, September 20

Just what is it that you want to do? We wanna be free, we wanna be free, to do what we wanna do.

What is it about training courses?

This afternoon, I had the delight of attending a training course/refresher. Nice venue, but the coffee was shit.
The guy who 'took' the course befits the name Mr Excitable. Any questions thrown at him were not dissimilar to throwing a dog a bone. He almost 'fizzed' with enthusiasm, so much so that it was almost off-putting.
Ok, so he's got a training job to do.
Ok, so he's enthusiastic about the products.
Ok, so he can't be seen to just sit there and 'deliver' the training/refresher course with about as much enthusiasm as a gay guy in a brothel, but purleeese.
This guy was acting like he'd been doing lines of coke in the toilets during the breaks. Honestly, he was so buzzed up, at one point I thought he might spontaneously combust.

Everytime I go to a training session, I always pick the 'wrong seat'. The 'wrong seat' would be the one next to the table with the worlds most boring person also sat at.
Enter Mr Monotone.
Unfortunately, I'd already spent 20 minutes sitting in the waiting lounge, drinking coffee whilst listening to him go onnnn and onnnn about things that evoke as much excitement in me as if I were faced with 20 public toilets to clean....with my mouth.
Not only was Mr Monotone....erm...very monotone, but he was the kinda delegate who couldn't keep his fucking mouth shut. Ok, so in some cases these kind of people have something relevant to say, but when he said, "I have a story about that scenario" for the umpteenth time, even Mr Excitable told him "none of us really want to hear that story".
At the beginning of the training session, he presented himself as a person who had been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
By the end of the session, he had not only emerged as one of the weaker people in the room, but his knowledge was so bad that it became very apparent he had been costing his Company lots of money. And when I say lots, I mean lots.
I left the training session with a little more knowledge and a nice pen. Now if it had have been a pencil....

It's one of the only training courses I can remember, where the tutor hasn't said anything about "sucking eggs".
The relief!

From the training venue to my parents house....
The Mission: To repair their supposedly broken computer.
It was indeed poorly, but not broken. A little movement here, a little jiggery-pokery there. A few scans and wipe downs, reboots and analytical skills and the old devil was performing up to speed once again.
I actually have no idea how I fixed it, but my folks seem to think I am Bill Gates, so why destroy the myth, huh?
A late addition to the itinerary, was my dad announcing that their surround sound system wasn't set up right. They've had this system, for about a year now and now he moans that it's not working right.
"The booms, crashes and explosions are all ok, but I can't hear what they are saying when it's just speaking."
There followed some more jiggery-pokery, involving me pressing buttons on the remote control unit that's got more buttons that the Pussycat Dolls! And they've got loads!
Problem solved, although once again, I'm not quite sure how. But that's not important, huh?

I bid my farewell with a "I'll send my bill on email tomorrow", only to be met with blank looks.

I have the most uncool parents in the world.

Not like The Girl. She tells me tonight that the relationship she has with her mother is more like a sisterly thing. Apparently, they have discussions about things that would normally be saved for slightly merry scenarios with your friends in some pub somewhere.

With this in mind, I'm not sure I'm ever gonna be able to look her mum in the eyes again.
Not that I'm now worried or anything....
"parp"

Tuesday, September 19

And all the grown ups say "sorry kids we got no reply'".

She said to me today, "When are you gonna sort your own life out, nevermind trying to help out others?"
And I replied, "I know what I want out of my life. I'm just helping some other people on the way."
And with that, she went "hrumph", with a shrug of her shoulders.
Nothing more was said.

My mum can be a funny old bitch.

Monday, September 18

Now, if I wrote you a love note, and made you smile with every word I wrote (what would you do?)

Tonight, I've mostly been cleaning.
And throwing things out.

As The Girl quite rightly pointed out earlier today, when I do this routine of cleaning or tidying or organizing, it's usually down to me feeling low about something. It's not so much that I'm feeling low, it's more that I'm feeling a little out of control with my life.
Things have been happening that have made me stall on my journey and pause for thought. The path that I thought I would take no longer seems like the right direction. The destination is almost the same, but the way to get there has changed.
It's all down to being with The Girl. She's changed the way I think about things and our relationship has developed to a level that I never in a million years would have imagined reaching. In fact, it's a level that I've never reached before.
Where as before I was pretty much convinced of where I would be in say....five years time. Now it's all kinda blurry. Although, through the haze, I can see myself still heading in the same direction, just from a different point of view. From a different perspective.

Trying to explain how I felt about her, I said something like this:
"It's like....when you go into a sweet shop with your change. And you get absolutely everything you want with every last penny you have. There's nothing left in there that you want. You've got everything."
Right then she put her arms around me and gave me a hug that just blew my mind.

Young love, eh?

Work....well work is still slow. They are gonna fire the Business manager at the end of the month. They already have his replacement lined up to start the day after he goes. He has absolutely no idea about any of this. I would feel sorry for the guy, but quite frankly, he's been a very naughty boy.
Loopy, a salesgirl I work with, has a serious ex boyfriend stalker. He rings, they shout, he texts, she scoffs, he drives by, she tries to ignore. It appears to be grinding her down and I can't help but feel sorry for her. It can't be nice.
Mr Happy, who works on service reception is becoming a good friend. We seem to have a lot in common and he's just very easy to talk with. Apart from the fact he's always bloody smiling. He's just got 'one of those faces'. I've given Mr Happy a copy of the Radiodread CD. I appear to have this current 'thing' of wanting to know what other people think.

My financial situation may be saved from hitting 'critical status' by the fact that I'm paid in two days time. I think this is the only time since I've been in this place, that I've really, really craved pay-day. This is possibly not a good sign considering how quiet we are at work and also the next few months are traditionally quiet anyway, so my chances of a good month are slim to none (and slim just left town).

Oh well, could be worse.

Recently, I've stumbled upon some great posts about Blogging. This is a great example of some of Blogging ethics and both here and here are some equally brilliant posts on commenting and such and such.
I find the whole blogging thing kinda fascinating, don't you?

New songs in MP3 format to download from the jukebox, on the right, by the way.

Sunday, September 17

So please give me another chance to write you another song and take back those things I've done.

Last night our relationship moved on to a new level.
In the light of two recent discoveries about The Girl, I'm now finding new reasons to question our relationship.

Having her within 10 feet of one of these little peskies and she will do her best impersonation of a screaming banshee.

Why are they called Daddy Long Legs? Is that just a stupid nickname for them because their correct name is one of those eloquent Latin names. It's probably 'bodyminscule-longlegetus-creepitum' or something.

My job for the first hour of us being together was to 'sweep' the rooms on a regular basis to ensure none of these blighters got in. A few of them slipped under the perimeter and were subsequently caught and released back outside by me. In a way I saved their lives because I had already seen The Girl reach for her shoe.

She has also revealed to me that she has a favourite breast. This came on the back of me jokingly saying "that one's my favourite", whilst gesturing with my eyes and nodding towards one of her breasts. With this, she replied that not only did she also have a 'favourite' but it was also the same as the one I picked.
Girls have favourite breasts? Does this also mean that guys have favourite testicles and it's something I've never really caught on with?

We got a little bit drunk, a little bit stoned.
At one point she took up a Tae Kwan Do stance against me. At least that's what I thought it was until she revealed it was in fact a Tae Bo stance. My initial fear was therefore pointless because let's face it....what was she gonna do....get fit in front of me?
The competition between us to blow the biggest bubble from gum failed miserably, however the giant chocolate buttons went down a treat.

So, Justin Timberlake's new album then huh?
Well, it's a Timbaland production, that's for sure. In my opinion it's head and shoulders above his debut solo effort, the songs are much better constructed and it's simply oozing with hooks. The main thing that strikes me is that it just sounds so....well, so Prince. There's influences of early, peak time and post name change Prince in most of the tracks, which is an interesting thought, because for me, I found most of the tracks for his debut album more of a Michael Jackson strain.
And how frustrating is it when the 'bonus track' is actually one of the best tracks on there. Does this mean the track in question isn't on all the pressed CD's and if so....why? Ok, so a different remix would be an acceptable norm, but a fresh track, with Snoop as well! What are they thinking?!

I haven't heard anything from the friend of a friend who does the favour thingy about The Killers tickets. There was a slight murmer of hope that we could have got ourselves on the guest list on the door, but alas the silence means it's probably not gonna happen. He did reveal something interesting though. On the morning in question, within 2 minutes of the official time the tickets got released, they shut their server down, thus rendering their website useless and flicked something on their phone system so all anybody could hear was that lady saying, "This is a BT announcement. All lines are busy, please try again later. You have not been charged for this call." So apparently....or is that allegedly....all the tickets except a small handful got sold to the people who were actually queued up outside the venue.

Ok, so I didn't manage to get tickets and if I'd have given it more thought, I would have driven over there myself and queued up with everybody else. The fact that I've never failed in securing concert tickets before probably gave me a little too much confidence.
That said, I'm really pleased to hear that the majority of the tickets were bought up by people who actually went to the venue and waited in the queues.

I would like to hope this could be a possible move forward to stop ticket touts buying up the tickets, then selling them for extortionate prices on Ebay et al. Although that said, within no time at all tickets for the gig were on Ebay, with some people asking £100 each.

Friday, September 15

Karma police, arrest this man. He talks in maths. He buzzes like a fridge. He's like a detuned radio.

Just how unproductive can one person be?

I've had a crap day. This morning I spent two hours on the phone, in synch with trying to get onto websites, all in the aid of getting tickets to see The Killers. I was unsuccessful. This now means I am waiting to hear from a guy, who is a friend of a friend, to try and call in a favour. I wont know if anything will come to fruition until tomorrow evening.
Next up was checking my bank balance in the hope that not only would the cost of the tickets be there, but also I'd have enough to go and buy some things like paint and skirting board. I'm looking decidedly thin on the ground in the financial department. I know I've spent out a lot lately, what with the V Festival and all that, but I didn't quite realise the pending disaster.
Oh well.

With no chance of opening my wallet today, I resided to sit around and sulk for a good hour. Here I was with a whole day off....to myself, feeling lost.
I have loads to do. I mean loads. So where was my motivation? Where was my drive and enthusiasm? Where the hell did all this down time come from?

The result of the day off so far has included me washing up, washing through the bedclothes, breaking down some broken tree branches and burning a few CD's. I could have normally done all that in an hour, but no....No, today I seem to be on slo-motion mode.

Over the last few days I've grown a beard. Not a full faced hairy Grizzly Adams style beard, just a little one, fairly tidy and short. This wasn't done out of laziness, nor from me being bored. It was done because I knew we were getting a visit from one of the mega high Directors of the Company sometime this week. He hates beards. I know this because when he's met Saleguys with beards before, he's made no bones about the fact he hates them, usually by telling the guy right there and then. He's old school in his thoughts and methods and is convinced people don't like to talking to guys with beards.
When we know we're getting these visits, there's always the 'extra effort' to tidy up and make sure everything's in it's right place. It feels like we're awaiting a visit from Royalty or something. Then there's the extra visits from other bosses to make sure everything's good so they don't get embarrassed.
All this fuss. And for what? 20 minutes at best, most of which is spent in offices anyway.
Well the fucker turned up, but today! On my damn day off!
That's the beard going then.

In a moment of spontaneity, I've spoke to The Blagger and after I've had a nice, hot bath and got changed, I'm going over to his place. He's invited me for the evening and to stay over. Unfortunately Krusty is also gonna be there, so there's no point in me taking the lube then, huh.

Thursday, September 14

We hope your rules and wisdom choke you, now we are one in everlasting peace

Last night, The Blagger came round.

I haven't been that stoned for a long, long time.
The end of evening saw me sat on my step, The Blagger stood behind me talking some bollocks and me listening intently to every word he said, but unable to even answer. I had trouble stringing even two words together, let alone a sentence. Thus, the evening ended just after 11.
Lightweights, huh?

Work has been the usual laborious stench, only lifted by the lady who collected her new car from me this afternoon. Her face was a picture and she was so excited, I'm surprised she didn't pee herself!

After work, a few of us went over the pub to see Mrs Osborne off. She's leaving and going on to pastures new, after spending the last 12 months manning our Service Reception desk. The Blagger joined us, along with his girlfriend, Krusty. So did The Bish, who works in The Commercial Department, Nutty Girl who works on reception, Even Nuttier Girl who also works on reception, Sniffer, another Salesguy and Mr Happy who used to work next to Mrs Osborne.
Confused? Yeah, so am I!
Nutty Girl downed a whole bottle of wine on her own and Even Nuttier Girl spent most of the evening trying to sway the conversations back to her. She's early thirties, even though she looks a lot older, probably due to the obsessive amount of time she spends under a sunbed. She's stick thin....tonight she told us all that guys have said to her that she has a body like Victoria Beckham and wears the most God awful clothes. I can't even begin to describe the sort of stuff she wears. It's like....well, the colours and patterns on some of her skirts and dresses remind me of stuff my Nan used to wear, when she was still alive. She must spend a small fortune on make up, judging by how much she plasters on and loves nothing more than talking about herself.
It's all "me me me".
And she makes no attempt to hide the fact that she sleeps with loads of blokes. Tonight, she told us that when she goes out, she makes sure she wears as little as possible, to get as much attention as possible, so she's pretty much guaranteed getting laid. In fact, tonight, she told us more than we really wanted to hear!
Her daughter must be so proud.

The patient waiting appears to have paid off. The Killers have announced a small tour in the UK, tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 9. As luck would have it, I'm off work tomorrow, so no prizes for guessing what I'm gonna be doing in the morning.
Fingers crossed that I can actually get through on the lines because Pandy has kindly informed me that if we miss this gig, he will cut my testicles off. Nice huh!

I've just done an online survey about blogging.
It's all anonymous and if it helps somebody at college, the why not.
Here's the link if anybody else wants to have a go:
Anonymous Blogging Survey

Two nights ago, I downloaded a really strange album. Strange in it's concept.
It's an album of classic reggae artists, such as Toots and The Maytals, Sugar Minott and Frankie Paul doing cover versions of Radiohead. If that wasn't a bizarre enough idea, the album is a complete duplicate of the OK Computer album, song for song.
Some of it works really well, some of it doesn't work at all, but above everything else I'm just in love with the whole idea.

So, tomorrow I'm off. I would normally be spending my time off with The Girl, but circumstances have intervened.
Hopefully it wont be too long....

Monday, September 11

The coldest heart you've ever felt, the coldest hands you've ever held.

Captured....

I am being held captive by a girl who I don't recognize.
Between houses, the winding road, almost a dirt track meanders between bushes and trees and eventually leads to a lone house. Three stories high, although I only know the deepest one....the basement.
This is my home.
Incarcerated by a heavy chain around my ankle, limiting my movements to 4 feet this way or that.
Her reasons for keeping me here, unknown.
Her face, unfamiliar.
Her motive, unexplained.
All I know is that I'm unable to get free.

I toil with ideas of escape, all of which appear reachable and yet when the time comes, she foils them all.
Every last one of them.
She is always one step ahead of me.

I don't feel myself age and yet I know that my imprisonment has cast many shadows. People on the outside have either given up hope or simply forgotten about me. My reasons for breaking free faltering with every day. Hope sinking further away into the horizon.

She doesn't abuse me. She doesn't exploit me. She doesn't belittle me.

I have to break free.
My chance comes when we are out in the car together. My left arm is heavy with a chain around the steering wheel, which is only unlocked when she allows me to fill up with petrol. I approach the 'hatch' to pay, only to be gestured by the attendant that he will open the main doors for me.
With a little hesitation I enter the building, knowing that she will be furious with me. At the counter, I find myself glancing outside to see her storming towards the building, shouting and screaming at the attendant to let her in.
I have the chance....the chance to tell him to call the police and ask for help....
But....I can't.
I have no idea why....but I just can't ask him for help.

And the dream ends.

Tuesday, September 5

When there's nowhere else to run, is there room for one more son.

....Patiently waiting for The Killers to announce a UK tour....

....A very slim possibility (read slim to none and slim just left town) that I'm going to see Robbie Williams play live next week....

Work is about as exciting as sitting on the toilet, taking a crap. In fact that's probably giving work a little more credit than it deserves.

Monday, September 4

I'm sure I'm not being rude, but it's just your attitude. It's tearing me apart. It's ruining everything.

I am officially pissed off with work.

Everything about the place just sends the creeps under my skin.
Earlier today....and yesterday to be honest, two things dawned on me:

1 - I'm not contributing anything to the place anymore.
2 - The place is contributing nothing towards me being happy.

*Sigh*

It's just utter bollocks.
I find it so difficult to believe that I work for one of the biggest companies in the UK (selling a particular car brand) and in essence, it is without doubt the most unprofessional, disorganized, haphazard, miscalculated and disorderly piss poor excuse for a organization that I've ever had the misfortune to work for.

Sunday, September 3

You're in denial, you're in denial and I know. Well what's my name, well what's my name. I don't know.

The anonymous calls are back.

There's been a nice quiet period of nothingness, then all of a sudden, they start again.
Friday night it was just after 11pm. Last night it was half past midnight and then again at 5.45am.
Does this person not sleep!
I can't even think who I've upset enough to want to do this. I mean....it must be playing on their mind a little for them to even bother to make anonymous calls to me at such odd hours.
The call this morning ended up with them leaving me a voicemail. No song this time....just silence. Not even anything going on in the background. Mind you, what on earth could be happening in the background at 5.45am!

Anyway, current faves on my speakers are The Guillemots album (thanks joe), The Magic Numbers album (again), Beyonce's new album, Robbie's "Rudebox", Outkast's latest offering and strangely enough Simon and Garfunkel.

Tonight, I've booked some tickets to see The Magic Numbers in November. I saw them at V festival and late last year but I still kinda crave some more.
This means confirmed gigs for the rest of the year include; Muse, Pink, Embrace, The Magic Numbers and Sandi Thom. There's actually loads more I'd like to go to, but the absence of a gig partner means I will have to catch them next time. Hopefully they last long enough for there to be a next time.

There's been some more changes at work. I'm still trying to get my head around what exactly they are playing at?! I'm convinced that if people actually knew how much of an unprofessional company we were, they'd gasp. Amazing how even nowadays, it's all about The Name and nothing to do with how businesses run themselves.

Dear person who put together the latest compilation for "Ultimate Prince".

What the fuck were you on? Crack?
The word pointless isn't even worth entertaining within my reply.

Saturday, September 2

All the people on the left, wap-bam-boogie. All the people on the right, boo-ga-loo.

I have an incurable addiction to dance music.

It's true, dance music only features as a small proportion of my music. The majority is more guitar based, with lyrics that tell stories and I'm a sucker for singer-songwriters, but that has never meant that I look down on dance music. Much the opposite really.

It's a rare occasion when you find a truly great lyric based dance tune, but that's not to say that they don't exist because they do. But the majority of this genre go for 'feeling' and 'structure' and 'drive' more than anything else. That pulsating precusive beat becomes hypnotic to the point of making the words seem irrelevant.
This is probably a good thing considering most of the songs I would label as 'great dance tunes' don't quite make it in the....let's say....great lyrics category.

Of course everybody has their own preference in songs and dance music is no different. Some people like the speedy stuff that makes the vocal sound like a munchkin from The Wizard Of Oz. Some people like more of a break-beat, instead of one continual tempo. Some people like very little or no vocals at all, while some like the basis of a 'song'....a verse, a chorus, a verse, a chorus, a bridge, a chorus.

Dance music, much like any other genre, goes through various stages of evolving. In my opinion, the most popular 'style' at the moment is kinda like this....

A female vocalist, preferably from a European country and even better if she can't quite sing in English very well. Oh yes, the poor pronunciation only adds to the song. No verse....no story....just a few lines spoken or semi-sung by the girl singer. Most of these lyrics seem to based around finding happiness or good things or even the spiritual and many of them are of course based around the theme of love. Either being in love or having just fallen out of love. Then of course, there are the kind that have lyrics that make no sense what-so-ever, unless you're either pilled up or stoned and dancing away to it in some club and then you feel this 'connection', while your brain tells you that it's the best song ever.
The bass drum doesn't do anything more exciting than beat on the 2 and four. The hi hat meanders between staying tight or enjoying the occasional "pssst" and the snare drum generally mirrors the bass drum.
The key to the whole thing is the bassline, which drives the song forward. Complimented by other keyboard jigger-pokery and percussion, the bassline remains the driving force behind the entire groove.

Some of this kind of stuff is shit, some of it is very listenable. I can't say I dislike it, but I must admit it's becoming quite tiresome recently.

Here's some examples of the wonders they would like to call....lyrics:

"I go ahh ahh ahh, you go ahh ahh ahh ahh 'cos you are the only one"

"Don't go mess with the soldier of fortune. Maybe he's the only one who can take your mind to another side of your soul. He is the soldier of love. The soldier of fortune.....Th th th th th th th the soldier of fortune....Th th th th th th th the soldier of fortune"

"Can you hear me, talking in my mind. I can feel you, you're with me all the time"

"But time passes by. For I wont say goodbye"

"You are the sun and moon, you are the spring in June, you are the one. "

"I hear a wishful thinking, in my peaceful world. I enjoy the exciting moments and no-one speaks a word"

"Take me home, in time you'll love me like one of your own."

"I get restless, I believe. I get restless and free. I get breathless and I....I get restless and high"

I wouldn't say I have a preference when it comes to dance music, as with any genre....I find I can listen to pretty much all of it. That said however, I find myself drawn to a certain style of track;
Bass drum kicks on the 2 and 4.
Snare drum mirrors, but occasionally will fade away and then come back with a frenzy of build up, usually accompanied by heavier vocals and more enhanced keyboard.
The hi hat is tightly closed most of the time, but there's nothing wrong with the occasional 'pssst'.
A bridge (break) in the middle somewhere that gives you that 'toilet door' sound. This is when everything sounds like it's being listened to in a club when you go into the toilets, so you have a barrier between you and the sound and it becomes 'muffled'. The a build up into a wall of sound that makes you wanna throw your arms up in the air and tip your head back.
The bassline is fundamental in driving the tune forward. The best sound is similar to somebody banging a pipe. That hollow, yet booming noise just gets me everytime.
Add one dose of keyboard frenzy, some female vocals, some percussion and a sample or two and you have, in my current ears...a winning formula.

Dance music always raises my spirits. I find that if I have dance stuff playing on my pc in the evening, my mood is never low. I feel lifted and emancipated and just....free. It's a great, great feeling.

Todays episode has been bought to you by the chord C, the pattern 4/4 and the simplicity that is dance.

Friday, September 1

Well I know that it's a wonderful world, but I can't feel it right now. I thought that I was doing well, but I just want to cry now.

It's difficult for me to find a balance in life.
The scales are either tipped one way or the other, sometimes to extremes.

I can think back to a time where I loved the job I was doing, but I had no place of my own and my personal life was 'so-so'.
Then, I can think back to another time when my personal life was pretty good, I was within touching distance of moving out of my folks house and yet my job stank.

Are we supposed to find a balance between them all?
Are we supposed to set a benchmark and strive to get everything above it.
Is there any point in wondering if there could ever be a time where everything is great. Not perfect, not absolutely amazing, not immaculate....just great.
Most people would settle for great, yeah? I know I would.

I strive to be optimistic, yet my dark pessimism beats me down everytime. I wonder if that's a part of the disease they call depression? When the vision has been inked by those dark, pendulous clouds, is it possible for these storms to be banished forever....Or will there always be the chance of becoming overcast.

I can see great things ahead and yet my feet are stuck in the festering rank of 'below par'. Getting unstuck will be a huge effort of both will and strength.
So where does the strength come from when your cavalry has deserted you?

Tuesday, August 29

It's heaven for now but not for long. It's gonna hurt you, it's going to make you feel so bad.

How must it feel when somebody you really love dies?

When you've been in a relationship, that ends against your wishes and you feel like your heart has been ripped out, you can actually feel like the other person has died. It can feel like you've just 'lost' somebody from your life in one swift swoop.
So when your partner dies....how absolutely terrible must that feel....

The Worst Thing

Saturday, August 26

The face in the water looks up. And she shakes her head as if to say, that it's the last time you'll look like today.

How long into a relationship is it ok to fart?

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Windy Miller. I'm lucky enough to have bodily functions that don't build up gaseous eruptus in my guts and then make it nigh on impossible to keep squeezing the little bugger in. My friend The Blagger more than makes up for that.

I have to admit that if The Girl were to 'let one rip', then I wouldn't be too bothered. So long as she didn't make a facade out of it by cocking her leg up and announcing that she was gonna 'toot', or worse still asking me, "Quick, pull my finger!"
Is this a sign that the relationship has moved on to the next level? The level that now permits the occasional bottom burp?

Questions about relationships....? Yeah, I have many. Who doesn't?
Does it ever get to the point where you stop questioning yourself about the relationship you're in and it just becomes an acceptable thing. I don't mean that to sound as bland as it does. What I mean is....when do the "what if's" stop?
It's not even that you want the "what if's" to be there in the first place. I guess they just hang around to remind you about all the shitty stuff in the past.

I'm not sure many people realise just how much of a huge step it is to be able to say to yourself...."Yes....I want this and everything else that comes with it" and laying your bare heart and soul right down in front of somebody, without worrying that a dirty, shit sodden shoe is gonna come down and squish all your hopes and dreams. Especially when they've been trampled on before.

I find myself completely in awe of her.

The recovery from the V Festival continues. Today, I've got off my chair at work and felt the aches and pains of an 80 year old. Maybe I'm getting too old for all this malarky. Staying up 'til all hours, watching the sun set and then attempt to rise again before my head hits the make-shift pillow.
Pandy called me yesterday. He chatted away, but in reality I think he wanted to talk about how fucking amazing the weekend was. He said his daughter Blue enjoyed it so much, that if next year he doesn't go, she's gonna go again with her mates.
My work here is done.

I can now conclude, after much ear bending, that the new Muse album is full of pretentious choral blankets, oversized guitar solos and a wall of sound to rival Phil Spector.
And what's with all the dramatic drumming?
You're not in a fucking marching parade, you're in a rock band. Bash the shit out of those fuckers!!!
Matt's voice is as whiney and meandering as ever. His words are tongue twistedly delicious.
At times it's completely OTT and so melodramatic, it almost folds on itself and ends up going up it's own arse.

I love it!

I gave her a bracelet, she gave me her heart.

The bedshaped jukebox thingy has been updated, on the right.

Thursday, August 24

Know what's on my mind, there's only one thing you will find. I got one design and that's to bump you 'til you drop.

Dear Robbie,

I've been a 'backseat' fan of yours for a while now. I can't say that I cared much for the Take That stuff, but when you broke away from the band and tried to find your own direction, I became more interested in you.
My interest grew when I found out that you were becoming a chronic alcoholic and drug abuser and your life was falling apart around your ears. That probably sounds very strange and possibly against a more natural reaction from your army of fans, who would have been more likely to have written you off at this point.
Not I.

I'm afraid I'm not the type of fan of yours that thinks everything you do is fantastic. Far from it. "Lazy days" was pants and "Radio" was a huge pile of steaming doo-doo. I can only hope you take such criticism with a pinch of salt, although deep down you may be nodding quietly? But stonkers like "Let love be your energy" came right out of nowhere and redeemed my love for you.
Your interviews have been few and far between, so it's been difficult to sift through the utter bollocks that the tabloids would like your fans to believe. The books that have been published appear to be the same one recycled, edited and reprinted, so it's been difficult to understand more about you and your life, especially when you sometimes make it so obvious how unhappy with your life you are. And that's what fascinates me.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not some kind of weird obsessive stalker or anything. I'm just really interested in somebody who's so successful and yet so unhappy.
A few years ago, you announced to the world that you were 'clean'. How could that be anything but brilliant news because the last thing your fans wanted was to wake up to headlines of "Robbie found dead!"
Can I be frank here? I just think you've got more control over yourself now. I wonder if you're as 'clean' as you say you are.

Anyway, let's move on to the purpose of this.
"Rudebox"
So different.
So simple.
So brutal.
So absolutely removed from anything you've done before and I love it!
This may win you a few more fans, but I also wonder how many of your followers will listen to it, jaw dropped and wonder just what the fuck you've done.
It's a brave move and I can do nothing but take my hat off to you Sir.

Driven by a drum pattern taken straight from some old skool 70's funk and complimented by a bassline that's reminiscent of some 80's breakdance beat. Stir that in with some rough 'toasting', the occasional spikey keyboard and mix your vocal through a vocoder and you have created something that sounds like it's an outtake from Prince's "Black Album".
Sheer genius!

Already the radio play is splitting people between loving and hating it, with very few sitting on the fence. This is what we want. This is what I wanted to hear you do. Something brave, experimental and so un-Robbie that it makes me sit up and listen.
Congratulations to you on being confident enough to say "fuck you" to your Record Company Executives when they heard the mixes, with a shocked look on their faces and a feeling that one of their biggest money spinners may be about to throw his career away. And an even bigger pat on the back for wanting to be different enough, in the hope that listeners will shut the fuck up and appreciate an artist who might just possibly have moved onto another level.

I would like to place my bollocks on the line and declare that for me, this is without doubt the best thing you've ever done.

By the way, you look 'wasted' in the video.
My compliments to you, once again.

Best regards,
bedshaped x

If you haven't heard it yet, it's here.

Tuesday, August 22

Trudging slowly over wet sand, back to the bench where your clothes were stolen.

My washing machine is my new best friend.
I will overlook the fact that it's still eating the occasional sock!

My iron however....
My iron looks crippled and decrepit and still has a long road ahead of it.

No bottles they said. There were bottles all over the campsite.
Airhorns are banned. They blew every night.
Fireworks are strictly forbidden. The sky lit up each evening until the early hours.
It makes you wonder why they even search your bags, which is a half hearted 'pat' and prod, coupled with "Have you got any bottles, glass, airhorns or fireworks in your bag?"

I think I'll feel back to myself by the end of the week.

Sadly, the eyeliner didn't get much of a look in, but the latex gloves were worth their weight in gold!

Monday, August 21

Barged our way into the toilet with the kung fu king. There's not enough hours in the day.

It was Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll, just without the sex.

For anybody that's never been to a music festival, it's almost impossible to explain the atmosphere, the people, the music, the vibe. The feeling generated from all those thousands of people who have come there for the same reason....A love of music.

It's not something you forget quickly, standing next to Scooby Doo whilst Radiohead deafened us with an amazingly uplifting version of "Pananoid Android". Scrappy was there too, but he didn't look like he was feeling the vibe as much, which figures, 'cos Scrappy was shit!

Grown men partaking in some naked mud-wrestling. A bunch of people all dressed for a wedding, Bride and Groom included. The obligatory superhero's present, although I can't remember seeing Spiderman. He was probably lay comatose somewhere after one too many smokes.

The rain came down, but it was short and sweet. Enough though, to create sloppy mud paths to and fro. Enough also, to prevent the 'shit-wagons' from being able to get access to clean out the toilets on our campsite. The 'trying to be helpful' signs might as well have said "Danger. Condemned!" for it was worth. Within an hour of the Arena being open, people turned a blind eye to the 'Toilets this way' signs and made do with anywhere within a 20 foot walk from where they were standing.
Guys doing their usual "I don't give a fuck who sees me take a leak", girls doing their usual "everybody crowd around me so nobody else can see me stooping".
Yeah....like anybody wants to watch a girl take a piss!
Apart from the golden shower fetish crew, of course!

Dodgeball was a great experience, shared with a few hundred people in the small hours of Saturday morning. Although the bunch of guys who kept shouting out quotes did get a little tiring after a while. They finally calmed down after about 40 minutes, although I think it may be because they passed out.

I have it on good authority that the guy from Hollyoaks isn't as hot in real life as he is on the show. Apparently I was standing right next to him and remained oblivious to everybody around us whispering, "Isn't that the guy from...." I think I might have stood on his foot briefly.

I return £80 lighter, a necklace lost somewhere in the middle of Radiohead's set, 3 full loads of dirty washing to get through, a sore navel ring, twice the amount of beer that I took originally, a bemused feeling of being possibly the only person I know who doesn't get Beck and a sentiment of warmth having donated my tent to charity.

Standing hair on the back of my neck moment - Gomez
Biggest let down - Hard Fi

I drank too much beer, I smoked too much grass, I didn't get enough sleep and I missed The Girl terribly.
I did however survive and got completely lost in the music.

Oh and I ditched Razorlight for Groove Armada. "I see you baby, shakin' that ass!"

Thursday, August 17

You've got to let yourself go, 'til the morning comes.

Friday morning, I head off for a weekend of indulgence.

Until Monday afternoon, I will be at the V Festival, enjoying much music of all varieties, soaking up an atmosphere that I just can't even begin to explain and generally getting off my tits.

I wish The Girl was coming with me. Many different factors have meant this isn't to be.
These next few days are going to be the most time we've gone with such minimal contact. I'll have my mobile with me, so there will be text messages and phone calls between us, but nothing like our 'normal' fashion.
Sometimes words are just never enough.

The music in the jukebox on the right has been updated.
It appears the groove that I had temporarily lost, has once again been found.

Tuesday, August 15

Right now is the way it's going to be, from now until forever. Let's have less of getting clever with me.

I bet Levis never saw this coming.

Making jeans can't be a straight-forward process anymore. Long gone are the times when all they had to do was set the machines to whichever style of cut and off you go.
Now, making jeans must have doubled in production time, because making the jeans to the 'cut' is only half the job done. Once cut and stitched together, they must undergo all manner of things, like being dragged through dirt, set partly on fire, ripped with a blunt knife, washed with stones, shredded, picked at, scuffed, scrubbed, mutilated, soaked with bleaches and all manner of different colours, dragged on and off a dummy model to get the 'worn feel'.

Anyway....no point to that. It's just something I thought about while I was sat on the step, having a smoke.

Over the past couple of weeks, anonymous calls have been made to my mobile. When I say anonymous, it's most likely somebody with-holding their number. Most of them I've ignored because I don't like answering calls from an unknown number and always think if it's a genuine call, they will leave me a message.
No messages.
I've picked the call up a couple of times, both being hung up on straight away.
A couple of times, the mobile has only rung a couple of times before being hung up. Sometimes nothing for 3 or 4 days, then 4 or 5 times a day. The ones before 6am aren't really that funny.
Today, my mobile rang. "Unknown number" on the screen, so I ignored it and switched the ring to silent. A minute later a text message tells me I have a new ansafone message.
I listen....
It's a song. A song I know. It also sounds like the person timed it just right so I would hear a certain few lines of the song, then hung up.
Seems like somebody has gone to a lot of trouble to make sure I heard that. And for what? Am I supposed to listen to the words and all of a sudden think of a certain person.
I did....The Girl.
And I also wonder what the person has been doing since they left me that message. Are they sitting there, waiting for me to call them? Are they waiting for a knock at the door or a similar message back? Are they sitting there, feeling all smug 'cos they got their important point across (it must be important, right, to go to all that trouble) and feeling confident that I have understood their message?
If they don't hear anything from me, will they give me some more of the song?
If it's one of my friends playing a joke, then I just don't get it.

So....the important stuff.
I've packed my tent back up after being pitched up in the garden for a few days to air out. I've washed through my sleeping back and sorted out all the clothes I'm taking with me. I'm doing the 'shop' on Thursday evening after work. That will be the last of the things to sort out, so Friday morning will be me waking up, packing the last things and setting off.
I appear to be a lot more organised this year.
This makes me worried that something won't go according to plan.

The pessimist in me beats the optimist any day of the week.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna be with The Girl.
Somewhere I long to be.
In who's arms I love to fall asleep in.

Monday, August 14

You work by committee, you had me pegged from the start.

a punch toy volunteer
a weakling on its knee
is all you want to hear
and all you want to see

Sunday, August 13

All this talk of getting old, it's getting me down my love.

It's been a weird day.

Work was unsurprisingly shit.
I went to visit the folks and Pandy.

Sunday night....in 5 nights time, I will be sat under the stars at the V Festival. Probably stoned, but almost certainly smiling.
I have a list....
I wrote it out last night and added a couple of things earlier today, so when I saw Pandy we could compare....It appears he hasn't even done a list. We bounced around ideas anyway.

I have the main things covered:
Clothes - check
Loo Roll - check
Gear - pending further investigation
Tent - check
Sleeping bag - check
Munchies - arrangements have been made for a midnight shop
Ticket - check
Eyeliner - check
Mirror for above - check

This could be the most amazing weekend of this year, so far. It's only missing one thing....le sigh....

Tomorrow, I may be having my third tattoo done. It all depends on if he gets chance to draw my design out properly. A phone call is in order tomorrow, to see if there's a slim chance.
It's been a long time coming, this third design of mine, but I think we're almost there now.

Saturday, August 12

I walk outside and try to see you right in front of me. Silhouette of something sweet and so bright .

It's heavy in the clouds above.

An old man sits alone on a park bench
Watching the world go by
As he always liked to.

Heavy on the eyes, hard of hearing
It was all that loud music
His mother always warned him.

An old cloth cap to hide his baldness
Glasses perched on his nose for assistance
As and when needed.

Watching the world go by in front of him
While his mind plays back memories
In black and white
And slow motion.

Of the years he spent walking a journey
That ultimately led him nowhere
Except full circle.

He always thought he'd be dead by now
Not so much 'live fast die young'
More just....die young.

His skin wears sores from the slipping and the falling
The years have added their unsteadiness
And stifled his pace.

His flame is all about to die out
But his heart is still beating
To the percussion that is life.

But it's still heavy in the clouds above.

New songs on the right, reflecting my mood.

Monday, August 7

Just remember your song and don't forget to keep singing.

When she left....

Strands of her hair on my pillow
Her smell on my sheets
Hand prints on my window.

An empty glass
Beside the empty cup
Traces of her lips on the edge.

Conversations of silence
Laughter for one
Hugs of invisibility.

The house has gown huge again
Twice the size
With only half the people.

Starsky with no Hutch
Rain with no clouds
A fish without a bicycle.

Not a feeling on loneliness,
Just a feeling of being
alone.

Wednesday, August 2

I don't care if you're black or blue. Me and the stars stay up for you.

How does a porn star maintain a relationship?
With your average couple who you would see here, there and everywhere driving their cars, doing their shopping, cutting the grass, painting the fence et al....the 'normal everyday things'....their sex lives are hidden behind closed doors (in most cases).
Their most intimate moments are private.
In the case of a porn star, their most intimate moments are thrown in peoples faces, so the whole 'fantasy' of sex behind closed doors gets shattered. And would that then mean that their 'behind closed doors' thing, from another persons point of view, would be the mundane things like cutting the grass or shopping for groceries.
Does it like....flip round?

In their relationship, I wonder if the person who isn't in the porn industry, gets over the whole jealousy factor by thinking, "Well it's me who they chose to go shopping with, it's me who they choose to chill out and watch a movie with, it's me who they go to sleep and wake up with."
The jealousy thing would surely tear you up though, right?
Your partner, who you love, doing intimate things with 'other people' would surely screw your head up, right?
How do these people hold it together?

Here's the scene:
A guy and his girlfriend in bed together. Advances are made, you know the score and he's at the point where he's playfully teasing her and about to 'go down'.
The thing is, this guy is a geanochologist....a gynecologyst....a 'fanny doctor' for want of a better phrase.
Just as his lips are about to touch hers, he blurts out, "Oh shit, I forgot to write up Mrs Badcrumbles' notes!"

How stupid am I!? I don't even know if a gaenachologyst (AKA Dr pour la Fanny) is a Doctor who also looks after guys....erm....'downstairs' issues, in which he case I should have referred to one as a fannydick doctor.

Work was shit.
BMW phoned me and asked me to send them an up to date CV.
The Blagger phoned me to get my arse into gear re; the above.
The Tattoo place was closed when I phoned them earlier today.
Drinks machine...."out of cups"
Fucking thing!

The Cv isn't going well....
Only one person to blame as I lit the end.
Twice
And all I can think about is fannydick doctors.

Tuesday, August 1

Our wrongs remain unrectified and our souls won't be exhumed.

I've always found it impossible to come up with a 'Top 10' list of my favourite albums.
My tastes change constantly and something I listened to 5 years ago can suddenly become my most played album.

Years ago, when an artist released an album, you would basically get 2 or 3 really strong songs, a couple of 'OK' tracks and the rest would be throwaway stuff. Otherwise known as 'album fillers'. This was never a big deal because 'singles' would always been seen as the driving force behind an artists' success. Occasionally an artist would release a blinder, creating an album of completely listenable tunes from start to finish.

Nowadays, the pressure on artists to release an album brimming with outstanding songs must be huge. Critics are quick to shoot down releases that only have a few standout tracks on them, even though a few years ago, that would have been deemed a "great album".

My preference, is for an album of decent enough songs that are not so bad that they're offending to listen to. I don't have any problem with occasional crap, so long as there's enough good stuff to tip the scales in a positive way.

I've just been sat on the back step, having a cheeky smoke and wondering....If I had to get rid of all of my music and just keep one album to listen to for the rest of the month, I'd choose "Green" by R.E.M.
If I remember to think about that again tomorrow, it would be a completely different album.

I collected my tickets today:

Faithless, Radiohead, Morrissey, Beck, Paul Weller, Keane, Razorlight, Kasabian, The Charlatans, Editors, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, The Go! Team, Rufus Wainwright, Bloc Party, Hard Fi, The Ordinary Boys, Starsailor, Girls Aloud, The Beautiful South, The Magic Numbers, Sugababes, We Are Scientists, James Dean Bradfield, Kano, Gomez, Sandi Thom, The Cooper Temple Clause, Mew, The Dears, The Cardigans, Delays, Echo And The Bunnymen, Nerena Pallot, My Morning Jacket, Pipettes, Matisyahu, Bell X1, The Divine Comedy, The Dandy Warhols, Orson, The Feeling, Xavier Rudd, Imogen Heap, Regina Spektor, The Crimea, The Dead 60's, Kubb, Kula Shaker, Morning Runner, Matt Willis, Richard Hawley, Jamie T, Oceansize, Daniel Powter, Gavin De Graw, Biffy Clyro, The Rifles, Phoenix, Bic Runga, Art Brut, Liam Front and the Slowdown Family, The Saw Doctors, Dogs, The Young Knives, Jim Noir, Rushmore, Lily Allen, Pure Reason Revolution, Mute Math, Boy Least Likely To, Captain, Lorraine, The Upper Room, James Morrison, Paulo Nutini, Butch Walker, Seth Lakeman, Director, The Grates, The Milk Teeth and The Dodgems.

Monday, July 31

She was a rum old slapper and we always tried to get her pants off when she phoned.

New person alert!

We had a new 'afternoon receptionist' start today.
There was tension in the air.
Apparently, the word was out that she was hot!
She arrived....
There were sighs.
Although I'm not quite sure why.

The body of Posh Spice.
Skin tone not dissimilar to an orange.
Make up applied with a shovel.
Accent that makes me cringe.
Nice hair though.

Her name is Maria. For the purpose of this blog and following unwritten blogging rules that all names must be changed to protect the innocent, from hence forth, she will be known on here as....Maria.

New person alert!
Quick, crowd round everybody!

Sunday, July 30

Well, I hide all the bruises. I hide all the damage that's done.

Well, I can't explain why it's not enough, just to be with you.

Saturday, July 29

You're wasting your time and my time as well. La la la living a lie, I guess that time will tell.

What is it about songs that don't end, they just fade out?

I've listened to loads of music tonight. Since I got back from work, I looked around for a new software MP3 player online and found a cool one with some funky functions.
Downloaded....installed....tested....

It's been playing random all night and I've noticed that only a very small proportion of songs 'fade out' nowadays. There appears to be an exception with dance music however, with the majority of them not quite knowing how to end the song and therefore taking the 'easy way out'.
When I first started thinking about it, I was heavily swayed towards the 'If a song fades out, then it had no ending' theory. A song with no ending is much like a book with the last few pages missing.
How does it end?!?!
But on closer examination, that theory goes completely out of the window because some of the greatest story tellers spun their tales and then faded out.

My conclusion....?
I'm stoned.

From out of nowhere, I've just had a flashback to when I went to see REM play in London last year. They introduced Patti Smith on the stage to duet on "E-bow the letter", one of my all time favourite REM tracks. But she seemed so overwhelmed with the crowd response, she was almost unable to sing. She missed her cue twice and dipped out of some of the words. Her confidence being restored when Michael Stipe took a hold of her hand.
It was all very emotional.

Memories eh? You can't buy shit like that anywhere!

Music updated on the right....

Dressed me up in womens clothes, messed around with gender roles, line my eyes and call me pretty.

Wednesday, July 26

It's never over. My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder.

Even though I've spent the last three days sleeping and waking when I want....
I feel tired.

Even Jeff Buckley isn't moving me like he usually does.

Sunday, July 23

Live baby live. Now that the day is over. I got a new sensation in perfect moments.

Sometimes, when you feel like nothing could ever take away that feeling of fizz inside....
Dread comes knocking on your door, once again.

Wednesday, July 19

I don't mind spending some time, just hanging here with you.

A lady called by earlier. She has a problem with the roof not opening on her convertible. I went out and tried it myself and wouldn't it just be fucking sod's law that it worked perfectly for me. Not wanting to make her feel stupid, I told her I'd seen this issue before and it came down to the simple fact that a new car would be 'stiff'.
She didn't quite understand.
I tried to make it simpler.
"It's stiff under the hood because it's new and hasn't really been played with enough. What it probably needs is some lubrication and some pumping to loosen it up."

It's pretty hot huh? Well, in The UK it is and as usual, we aren't prepared for it.
How much of a guarantee is it, that every person who moans about it being too hot at the moment, will do the same about it being too cold in January.
It is however in heat like this, that I can't help thinking how great it would be to be a girl.
How great would it be to be able to wear strappy, flimsy tops and a skirt that allows a breeze up in a welcome area.

Brief summary of the last few days....
Hot, work, slow, gifts, drink, smoke, Blagger, sketch,

Is it only me, or does Jayne look a hell of a lot like Davina?

Oh, just me then....
I'll get my coat....

Monday, July 17

I was just guessing at numbers and figures. Pulling your puzzles apart.

What the hell is up with Shaggy's voice?

It's impossibly ridiculous, yet terribly infectious.
If I close my eyes when he's singing, all I can see is a muppet. And when I think about it, he doesn't actually remind me of any of the muppets, just....a muppet.
But it would have a wide mouth....a big floppy hair....and be purple....maybe.

Sat outside a bar.
A gent in his late fifties, early sixties sits down next a woman.
They share a drink,
they share conversation,
they share laughter,
they share love.
The way he looks at her gives away his position of pure adoration.
And I wondered if he was remembering that day they spent together, so long ago, when a butterfly handed on her hands and he thought she was the most amazing thing he'd ever seen.

In a mix of many other people around, that guy made me envy him.
I think we decided their names were Iris and Derek.

Sunday, July 16

All we are saying, is give peace a chance.

So what is it that makes relationships go stale?

Friday, July 14

We all face the same way. But still it takes all day.

Traffic jams fuck me off.

I can't admit to that with most things, but being stationary on a Motorway fucks me off.
I came to a complete stop about 5 times on the same Motorway today. Ok, so if there's roadworks then fine, I expect the traffic to come to a 'calm down'. But when I've been sat in the car, not able to get out of first gear for the last 20 minutes, only to find that the traffic speed up and eventually gets back to normal, with apparently fuck all causing the hold up, it fucks me off.
Something else about traffic hold ups that fucks me off....
When the traffic slows down, then comes to a complete stop, then crawls along for ages, then you find out all that tail-back was because there was an accident....on the opposite side of the Motorway!

I lost count of the times I saw people picking their noses. Let's not even go there about what several of them did with the offending bogey.

And do you know what I really love....
Lying in bed after I've brushed my teeth and feeling that clean, tingly sensation in my mouth.

Wednesday, July 12

I wanna run away with you.

It's a beautiful night.

Sat on the step
Glancing upwards to be met with the stars
Peaceful
Calm
Almost surreal

This ain't exactly what I had on my mind
Stopped me in my tracks
Caused me to take steps back
But the whole thing
just....
Beautiful

Monday, July 10

Tomorrow never comes until it's too late.

My coffee container is almost empty.
It's not entirely empty, just almost.
So do I refill it now or wait until it's so empty, I can't even get one more spoonful out?

Shadows are strange things
While I was in the bath earlier, I noticed the shadow being cast on the tiled wall. This shadow was made up from the showerhead and the hose, a soap container and the shower curtain, which has a knot tied at the bottom.
From this I saw:
A witch, a dog with two heads, a shoe with the heel split, Marge Simpson, a Native Indian wearing a really tall hat, a robot sticking out it's square tongue, a shovel on top of a very large drill, a deformed penis and some I can't remember.

I've done loads today.
It's just been one of those days when everything I wanted to get done, got done. Work was cool and I'm officially up to date, ahead in fact, if that's even possible. At home, I've done loads more cleaning, burnt 6 or 7 cd's, done a work out in my "Get fit for V Fest" quest, done loads of washing and ironing and even had time for a nice long soak in the bath and an hour of Big Brother catch-up.

I feel really good today. Almost the opposite of how I felt yesterday, particularly because I missed The Girl. We spoke and it bought us a little closer together, but then the distance grew again.
Some days are a bit shit like that.

New songs to download on the right--->

Thursday, July 6

Put your hand in my hand, let me show you the way.

This week has been kin of odd.

The building of the barbecue is almost complete. I'm off work tomorrow, so I'm gonna tidy the brickwork up and get something for the last layer. Most people would have a top row of slightly different brick....I'm thinking wood.

The night over at The Blagger's place has gone down the toilet. We delayed it until tonight, but I called him earlier and he was almost 200 miles away, at some car auction. Nothing has been rearranged, but that's cool, 'cos the dress idea didn't come together anyway.

I've found my sketch book, so I've been trying to finish off my tattoo design. It's almost there....almost there....

There's a guy coming to see me at work on Saturday. He's in the market to buy a Mondeo ST TD (boring car speak). Nothing earth shattering there, but he wants to trade in his Audi TT! I Think I might be close to getting a deal with him, which will mean I can smoke around in his Audi for a while.
Nice!

Current 'heavy rotation' on my MP3 player is:
The new Boy Kill Boy cd, We Are Scientists, The Walkmen, Gomez, Keane's latest CD, The Fast & The Furious Tokyo Drift CD soundtrack and The Number 1 Euphoric Album (4 discs!).
Currently, I'm loving that euphoric album and it's the perfect way to spend the evening on the back step.
Know what I mean?
Nudge nudge, wink wink!

Last night, I had a dream that involved me getting shot.
I was driving along and the guy in the car in front pulled forward very slowly to turn right....but he wasn't indicating! In the dream, I got frustrated with him and did that 'gesturing with your hands up, as if to say "what's the skinny?" kinda thing. He didn't even turn right, instead he turned his engine off, got out of his car and took shots at me with a shot gun.
I dunno what happened after that.

Have I mentioned it before how brilliant it is having deaf neighbours?

If music be the food of love, play on....

If you're not really interested in music, move along.....

Technically speaking, the sender of my CD for the CD Shuffle-A-Thon broke a rule. This rule being that the track count is limited to 12. I have a CD here with 15 tracks on it, although one of them doesn't really count because it's an intro to a song.
That said, I'm kinda happy about it, as it means I have more music to listen to and who can say no to more music?

Since there's only one song out of the 15 that I don't know, my revue is gonna be slightly different. I don't feel the want or need to verbally describe the track, so instead I'm gonna say a few things about how I feel about the songs....kinda.

As per the rules, here's my review:

1 - "The last time I saw Richard" by Joni Mitchell.
I've always loved Joni. This is a great example of some of her finest work from, in my opinion, her finest album. Joni is responsible for why I love Alanis, Jewel, Paul Cole, Tori et al. Beautiful storytellers, all of them. I think I first heard this song about 10 years ago. Somebody put the album on while some friends and I were having a 'session'.
I love Joni singing "Big yellow taxi", but my favourite of hers still has to be "Woodstock", probably because of the story behind it.
Joni soothes my soul. I can listen to her all night long and know that I'm gonna have a sound night's sleep. She does something to me with her sometimes crystal vocals and moody outlook. I wonder if most female singer-songwriters don't wish they could be more like her.
A legend.
An icon.
Joni.

2 - "Tainted love" by Soft Cell.
I hated this song when it first came out. I struggled with some of the modern romance era and found myself desperately searching for something 'different'. This was the time I discovered Prince. It is however, a classic. The hook has been sampled many times, most recently by Rhianna, and I thought very successfully as well. Marc Almonds vocals were never anything special in my opinion.
This bouncy song drives ever forward and I defy anybody who lived through the eighties to deny they know it.
It's a great floor filler, a simple tune and infectious as fuck. That said, I must admit to loving the Marilyn Mason version.
Oh....and how shit was the Soft Cell video to this!

3 - "Little lover" by AC/DC.
I really like AC/DC, but admit to being more of a fan of the stuff with Brian singing, instead of Bon.
This is a great, dirty, bluesy number. The drum beat drives the song along, accompanied by the bassline that sets the tone for the seductive vocals. Yes, an AC/DC song with seductive vocals, it's true. I really like stuff like this and AC/DC were always good at delivering slow or upbeat rock that made me wanna dress up like Angus and strutt around.
It's amazing just how long this band have been around. They seem to have a formula that still strikes a chord (pun intended) with so many people.
It will be a sad day when Angus decides to hang up his school uniform.
This is a dirty song, with a riff that oozes images of being perfect playing in the background whilst seducing your lover.

4 - "Sheila na Gig" by P J Harvey.
I wasn't really into P J until I saw her play live at Glastonbury. I got dragged along by my friend who had been raving about her all weekend and as nobody else was playing at the same time that I wanted to watch, I gave in. I've been a fan ever since. She's hugely influential, much more than most people think and I must admit to quite liking the fact that she's never really 'broke' in the UK.
This song's great purely because it sounds so raw, almost like they recorded it in one live take. I love stuff like that. A good mid tempo rock chic song that puts guys in their place!

5 - "The rocker" by Thin Lizzy.
My Cousin got me into Lizzy back in the day. Being older than me, she reveled in being able to tell me stories about her adventures. Her description of her first concert was captivating. I was completely hooked on her descriptions of the band actually onstage, not so far away from her. I was always under the impression that music stars weren't real people, so when she told me about how they stood on stage, how they played their instruments and how Phil used the little mirror on his bass to reflect the spotlights down into the audience, I was intrigued.
Pandy, my brother was also into Lizzy for a while and I guess it's him who I have to thank for getting me really into the whole 'rock' scene.
He was so sad on the day we were told Phil had died. I was sad that he was sad.
I still think "Jailbreak" was their best song, but I can listen to pretty much anything by this band.

6 - "You leave me dead" by McQueen. (an unsigned band)
This is the track that I didn't know. Why are they unsigned? Perhaps it's because people aren't really into the female rock/grunge stuff anymore. Not wanting to be rude, but Hole already did stuff like this better and so did the Distillers. That said, it's not unlistenable and with each listen, I'm finding myself more atuned to the whole feel of the song. I quite like the build up and let's face it, you can't argue with a girl who can holler!

7 - "Coffee and TV" by Blur.
I can take it or leave it with Blur. For some reason I've never really got into them and to be honest, I much prefer the stuff Damon is doing now with Gorillaz and Graham Coxon's solo stuff. Their last 2 albums didn't really inspire me and I wonder if it's because their were just too many musical differences within the band.
This is a good example of the Blur stuff that I like. My favourite song of theirs is probably "Tender" and I'm reminded of playing that particular song on repeat for ages while I went through a very low period of my life. I loved the whole Blur V Oasis thing that hit the 90's. Neither band won in my eyes and somebody should have just banged their heads together and told them to play nice.
A great video accompanied this track and that's probably why it was so successful.

8 - "Old Codger" by The Stranglers.
Again, it was Pandy who got me listening to this band.
When a lot of people are asked what their favourite Stranglers song is, they will often say "Golden Brown". I fucking hate that song.
This a great song of theirs. The harmonica does it for me. It's got a mad feel to the whole song. Like they put it together as an afterthought. I'd say Bob Dylan was a huge influence on this song and if Bob's in the underline, then you can't go wrong, can you.
The track reminds me of a cross between Van Morrison and The Rolling Stones, back in the day, until of course the vocals kick in.

8.5 - "Theatrical Parts" by Public Enemy.
Just an intro.
I have this to say about Public Enemy....They did what they did very well! They tapped into a niche that had never been touched before and their huge influences can still be heard in rap today. I always liked their hooks, especially those annoying 'screeches' that made me think, "Shit that's sooo annoying, but completely infectious. I need to hear that again!"
Any guy who can get away with wearing an absurdly oversized clock around his neck is good in my books, but what they hell was he thinking when he did that reality program in America!
My biggest issue with them was always that I loved the songs, but didn't really dig the message. I found them a little too political for me.

9 - "Strict Machine" by Goldfrapp.
Alison Goldfrapp is sex, it's as simple as that. They are one band that I've never seen live and would love to see. Ask many a guy about Alison and most of them wouldn't bat an eyelid, but she certainly has something. She influenced Madonna's latest incarnation and I hope they will be around for a lot longer because I don't think they're anywhere near their peak stuff yet. They are the band I always wanted St Etienne to be.
Goldfrapp are a great band to listen to when you've come back from a night out. They seem to have a way of keeping the tempo and the mood levels up, without cranking things out of proportion.

9.5 - "Black hole of the sun" by Jocelyn Brown.
This is just me all over. I love old skool soul like this. It just breezes along, without a care in the world and even though it doesn't do much to actually 'stand out' from the crowd, it's the sort of stuff that you just listen to all night long.
Yep, this is early hours music for me.
This is from back in the day when they made records that had a proper intro that lasted ages, teasing you along to get to the main bulk of the tune. Then it just adds layers and layers of old smoothy silk.
When I used to DJ, I always hoped I'd get a set in a place when I could play this kind of stuff all night. People would just be sat around, chatting and doing whatever, while the ear-friendly soul spoke to them in the background.

10 - "Lilac wine" by Jeff Buckley.
When Jeff died, we lost a major talent. His music, his vocals, the arrangements and the whole damn package was just was ahead of it's time. His silky voice meanders in ways that is seen less and less in male vocalists nowadays and it's such a shame.
Somebody recommended the Grace album to me years back and after a while, I finally got around to listening to it. The whole album is just perfect. Each song telling it's own story in such a way that you somehow feel closer to the man who sung it.
The beginning of the song, with just his voice and a gentle guitar, tells a story of sorrow. The rest of the intruments feed in, leaving just enough breathing space for the rest of his story to be told.

10.5 - "Road" by Nick Drake.
Again, for me, this is perfect 'late night' listening. Nick's vocals are always smoothe and this is a great song with melody and meaning. Two things that I love about songs. This sounds like it should have been included in an episode of 'Thirty Something', a program, which I loved! It captivates my attention and then kindof ends, almost like he hasn't finished what he's saying.
Plucky strings, a calming voice....this is pefect music to play after having a smoke.

11 - "Pandora's aquarium" by Tori Amos.
Oh Tori...Tori....
Is there anything that she's done that I don't like? Er,....that would be a "no" then. Tori is sex.....Oh, have I already said that before? Well, fuckit!.
I discovered Tori when she released the Little earthquakes album. I was completely hooked by the lyrics, told by an angry girl who sounded so pure....so innocent...so sweet.
I saw her play live at Glastonbury, when she had technical problems with her keyboards and apologized to the audience for having to play the entire set on her piano. I think it's right about then when I realised that she was just so amazing.
I hated the fact that loads of people cottoned onto her only because some Dj remixed one of her songs and made it into some huge house anthem. She was way, way above that!
Listening to Tori calms me. Listening to Tori makes me feel at peace. Listening to Tori makes me feel like people can beat anything in their lives!
She's gone through some unbelievable shit, you know!
This is typical Tori, with plinky plonky paino and meandering vocals, weaving a tale of love. Her gorgeous voice just sounds so damn agreable, whatever mood I'm in.

12 - "Amsterdam" by Coldplay.
What can I say about Coldplay? I loved them. Loved being the appropriate word here. I saw them play live as a support band, decided to listen to them further, discovered that they were in fact great, particularly Chris Martin's lyrics and vocals, but I have to admit that...and I apologise now if it offends, but since Chris has got married, things have changed. Their last CD did fuck all for me to be honest. Compared to their previous offerings, which in my my opinion were 'genius at work' albums, I feel like their latest stuff just doesn't cut the mustard with me.
My fondest memory of Coldplay was when I saw them live on the last night of their 'Parachutes' tour, in London. We didn't have tickets and decided we would try out luck. After a couple of hours of hanging around outside the venue, we got a bargain price off the ticket touts and I managed to get in with a Wonderstuff ticket for a gig at the same venue a few weeks before and my friend got in with a Morrissey ticket from 6 months previous!
I love the Parachutes album, but I think A Rush Of Blood To The Head is still their finest work to date.
"Bit time, is on your side....it's on your side now."

So there you have it.
I am indebted to yoko who sent me the disc and even though only one song was new to me, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Huge thanks to swisstoni for including me and even larger portions to Yoko, because it was her who actually thought of the idea.
My CD was received by yummybraingravy and got reviewed here.

Cheers guys!

Monday, July 3

How do you always have an opinion? And how do you always find the best way to compromise?

You know when you have one of those days, when you get lots of little things done and dusted, which is great, but then when you think back, you don't feel like you've actually done anything.
Yep....one of those days.

I handed over 'my car' to the guy who bought it earlier. I spent ages with him, going through all the controls and explaining how to use the SatNav and how the MP3 player works. He was all excited as I told him more and more stuff about what the car could do.
He's a nice guy....
It's gone to a good home.

Being without a car is crap. Last night I used a Mondeo Estate. Fucking horrible car! Ok, so it was top of the range, but it drives like a bunch of donkey balls. Good sound on the stereo though.
Today, I've come back in a BMW 3 series. Yeah, it looks real flash, but once again, it drives like a bag of shit, I find the pedals too close together and the stereo is absolute wank.
I've come to two conclusions:
1 - Cars bore the fuck out of me.
2 - I will judge a car by the performance of the stereo.

Work has been a bitch!
Since The Blagger got fired, they have also fired Jabba, the Finance Guy. Today, we've had a guy start to replace Jabba.
I popped into 3rd Time Lucky's office this afternoon to say, "Hey, anytime you want to fill that position filled with somebody who can actually do the job, then let me know".

I went out for a test drive with somebody today. He came in with his wife and was undecided about which car to buy, so he asked for two test drives, one in each.
No problem....normally.
This guy could drive about as well as The Pope can rap!
I actually started to panic when I realised how bad his driving was. When we got back to The Dealership, I stood my ground and told him that I wouldn't take him out on the second test drive because I wasn't confident enough in his driving skills (or lack off), particularly because he was driving an unfamiliar car.
He didn't take it well!

I think some people may be slightly worried about me at work, because I spent most of the afternoon asking girls if I could borrow a dress from them.

Sunday, July 2

When you first left me, I was wanting more. But you were fucking that girl next door, what d'ya do that for.

Why am I feeling so tired?

I feel like I've not slept for 72 hours, which is stupid because I know I have. In fact, I've had some reasonably early nights (for me) and it's not like I've been lay there begging myself to go to sleep, 'cos I haven't. If anything, I've been dozing off into my sleep like state in record times.
It's not a mental tiredness either, it's definitely a physical one. My knee isn't helping matters, making it difficult to get a 'comfy spot' and sometimes bringing me out of my sleep to remind me just how much it hurts like a bitch.
Considering that over the last few nights, I've been in bed at reasonable times, I think I'll give up on the idea that it's more sleep that I'm craving and perhaps I should take it easier on the old bones.
This concerns me, particularly as V Festival is only seven weeks away and is without doubt, always the toughest weekend of the year for me. There's also a strong possibility that we're going for an extra day, so perhaps I should begin stocking up on the multi vitamins now!

The whole World Cup thing is apparently over for England. I'm not a follower of football, but even so, The Girl and I got treated to some 'real live football fan action' last night by her neighbours. The cheers, the clapping, the shouting, the "OOoohhhhhhhh", the jeers, the encouraging chants that said neighbours directed to their TV (which was in their garden, due to birthday party/barbecue/friends over type thing) were all we needed to be able to follow what was happening. By the end of the match, we switched on the TV and found it highly amusing that the neighbour's terrestrial signal was slightly ahead of the Digital signal we were watching and consequently their screams, claps and "OOOhhhhh Noooooooo" cries kind of 'gave away' whether the ball that was still on the penalty spot on our screen was gonna go in the net or not.

The news reports on the radio and some of the newspaper articles seem a little harsh to me. There's lots of blame being laid at the feet of Rooney, who by all accounts is some sort of footballing God. Ok, so he fucked up, but is this one guy really to blame for England losing the match and ultimately a place in the next round?
Perhaps I should just have a nice cup of 'shut the fuck up' when it comes to talking about football, considering I know so little about it. It was really nice to see so many people in this Country showing their support with flags, t-shirts and all the other stuff and kinda makes me think that we rarely 'pull together' as one in this day and age.
The road where I live had many a house donning flags from their windows. Lots of cars had flags and other signs of support plastered all over them. Today, when I drove back from work, many of these have already been removed.

I think the sullen mood of the Country meant that most people just wanted to stay in because work was pretty damn quiet. Although saying that, I appear to have sold the car that I'm driving.
Not being a fan of cars means I don't get upset or mardy when the car I'm driving gets sold. Jeesh, some of the other Sales people get their arse firmly in their hands when you tell them they have to hand over their keys because you've just sold their car.
I will kinda miss it though.
Although I don't think the red hot leather burning sensation from the seats will be missed much.

I've met up with The Blagger and Krusty tonight. He seems to be doing ok, but he's getting slightly bored now and actually has some kind of 'plan'. This is a good sign, trust me!
He's asked me over to his new place sometime during the week. They've been telling me about their nosey neighbours. Apparently, when an unknown car pulls into the 'private/residents only' car park, all the curtains start twitching. There are several neighbours who are allegedly really nosey, so we've devised a plan:
This basically involves me going round his place, as agreed, but making sure I make some unnecessary noise when I go into the car park, thus attracting the attention of said neighbours. I'm gonna ring him, so he comes out to meet me from the car and we're gonna hug and kiss.
Oh and he's gonna slap my arse, in a flirty way.
Oh, and I'm gonna be wearing a dress.

The cd that I received in the Shuffle-A-Thon is currently playing on my pc. It kinda worried me, all the care and attention that the sender had put into, not only the thought of which songs to include, but also the accompanying letter, giving titles and reasons for their inclusion. Way, WAY more than I put into mine! I had so much trouble limiting myself to the 12 song limit, that I decided to go all random and just take the last 12 songs that I'd just played. There was no box, with designed and printed cover. Hell, I didn't even put the disc into a box, I just slipped it inside a pvc slip cover, wrote my blog address on it and posted the fucker. No track listing (which was later rectified), no explanation, no box, no cover, nothing.
With music being such a passion of mine, I kinda feel like I let my side of bargain down.

This disc needs more listening.
Unfortunately....and through nobody's fault but my own, I know all but one of the tracks. However, there are songs on this disc that I haven't listened to for a while, so I'm gonna give it my undivided attention for the next couple of days, then write my revue up here.
